Today, societies and governments all over the world are trying their best to redefine marriage. They are doing all they can to shut down Christian discussions on the issue. As far as they are concerned, marriage is a social construct and as such should be subject to the whims and caprices of the ever changing society.
We know though, that marriage is God’s idea. In fact, marriage existed before society. We can well go on to say marriage gave rise to society. The Bible tells us that when the earth was populated by as many as only one man (you cannot have a society of one person), God said “…it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.“ Genesis 2:18. There are several reasons God instituted marriage. One of them was to deal with ‘alone-ness’, another was to raise the next generation of God-seeking people.
God has never hid his intention for mankind. He wants us to populate the earth, not just with people, but with godly ones. All through Scripture, we see God showing special favor to those who raise their children properly. We also see His displeasure shown to those who neglect this solemn responsibility. Take Abraham for example, God was extra pleased with him because He knew “… that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just, so that the LORD will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him” Genesis 18:19. Eli on the other hand wasn’t so blessed. In fact, he received judgement from the Lord. of Eli God said “For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons blasphemed God, and he failed to restrain them.” 1 Samuel 3:13.
God sincerely expects parents to do their best in bringing up the next generation to love and honor God. He was emphatic in his expectation from our homes. He said “Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. So be on your guard, and do not be unfaithful to the wife of your youth“ Malachi 2:15.
One of the reasons parents fail to raise their children right is the fact that they fail in their responsibilities to each other. The instruction is DO NOT BE UNFAITHFUL
